Can Breathing Improperly Cause Tight Quads?

We think of muscles separately, working individually with unique functions. In reality they blend together and work as a structure of tensegrity.

This picture demonstrates the myofascial chain that links the diaphragm, iliopsoas and quadriceps together.

In some people, we find common patterns of tension throughout this chain.

Note how important proper diaphragmatic breathing is, and how times of stress and upper rib breathing can affect the hip flexors/quads.

Interestingly tight hip flexors (iliopsoas) can also affect the ileocecal valve in the intestinal tract as it crosses over it on the right hand side – therefore tension is this chain can also cause strange symptoms such as diarrhoea or constipation.
